ReadPhonics Installation |

following windows will appear
on the computer screen. You may click on the <Next> buttons
respectively.
If you agree with ReadPhonics Copyrights, click <Yes> button.
After installation is complete, you must restart your computer.
After installation, remove the installation CD from the CD-ROM drive
and load the Book CD.
If the program does not install itself automatically, you may
select the <Start> button and then select <Run>. Type
"D: Setup" in the window and click <OK>. "D:"
should signify your CD-ROM drive. Make sure the name of your CD-ROM
drive is typed accordingly.

This screen is the first
screen you will see after installation. Drag the mouse-pointer to
the book title you wish to read. You will see the book's information.
Click <Run ReadPhonics> to run the program or <Continue
Installation> to install more items from the Book CD. |

ReadPhonics Registration |
 |
You must register your ReadPhonics
program.
You may use the program 15 times without registration. |
 |
If you have Internet access,
you may register the program easily on-line. In the registration
window, type the serial number and click on <Register Online>.
After 24 hours, click on <Check Unlock Code> to receive your
unlock code automatically. Click on <OK> to finish registration.
Registration will take one to two days longer on weekends and holidays.
For more information, please refer to the left column of the registration
window. |

Add User |
 |
Click on <Add User?>
to input the name of the user. Type the name of the user in the
window. You may add up to four users, and the program will save
the individual study progress of each user. To delete a user, click
the button next to the user's name.
When the <Delete User> box appears, click on the button and
then click <Yes> to delete all record of the user.

Main Menu |

There are five categories
in Main Menu.
Read Stories: Your reading begins (Refer to Read Stories section
on page 9).
On-line Writing Lesson: Your On-line Writing Lesson (Refer to Writing
Menu on page 10).
Parents Checkpoints: This corner is especially designed for parents.
Parents can check their children's progress under this menu.
ReadPhonics Help: Information regarding ReadPhonics system help
and program help.

Select a Book |

On this screen, you can
select or change the book you would like to read. Select a level
(1-4) to view a list of all available books under that particular
level. Scroll through the menu by using Up arrow or Down arrow to
see the entire book list for the level. Drag the mouse-pointer to
the book title you wish to read. You will see the book's information.
Click the book title to begin reading. Four number icons at the
top of the screen correspond to four different levels. Move your
mouse-pointer over any icon to view the books in that level |

Study
Option Set-Up
Click <Test Option> in the Select a Book screen to bring up
the window on the left. You can change the following study options:
Select <Spelling Test> or <Definition Test>. If you
choose <Spelling Test>, you will be asked to spell the vocabulary
word correctly after seeing its definition and hearing its pronunciation.
If you choose <Definition Test>, you need to choose the best
definitions for a set of vocabulary words.
Decide whether you are going to activate the following options:
Vocabulary, Word Puzzle, Comprehension Review, or Paragraph / Essay
Writing. Password: If you set your password, you will have to enter
the password in order to change study options.
Have you selected desired test format for
the user? It is recommended that you select Spelling Test for
1st-3rd grade students.
Have you enabled/disabled Vocabulary Test, Comprehension Review,
or Writing section?
1st or 2nd grade students might prefer not to go through the Writing
section.
Have you set a password? You might want
to prevent other users from changing Study Options.

Click on a chapter title
if you want to read it, or click Continue to read the current page.

Click the page number to
review the test word list from that chapter. Click a word to see
its definition. Within the definition window, you can double-click
on any word to view its definition too. Type the vocabulary word
several times in the Practice Area for better memory. |

Read Stories |
 |
Select <Read Stories>
from main menu to begin reading. The Picture & Sound CD must
be in your CD-ROM drive whenever you use the ReadPhonics program.
Double-click the word to see its definition.
A corresponding picture and pronunciation are also available for
each vocabulary word. Within the definition window, you can double-click
on any word to view its definition too.
< + > < - > text size adjustment.
< > > < < > go to next or previous page.
Use American Heritage Dictionary for more.
Quick Note: Jot down your thoughts and ideas, important events,
names, or settings in this box. It will become a valuable reference
for your essay writing. After entering Quick Note, click <Save>.
Change Book: Click <Change Book> to change a book to read. |

Comprehension Review |


|
Most Levels 1 and 2 questions
are in multiple-choice format while most levels 3 and 4 questions
are in true/false format. Each true/false answer provides an explanation
to enhance the students' understanding of the text. |

Vocabulary Test |

|
The user can specify the
test format: Definition Test or Spelling Test. It is recommended
for lower level elementary school students to choose Spelling Test. |

ReadPhonics Word Puzzle |

|
You will see the definition
of a word on the blackboard. Enter the spelling in the blank boxes
provided at the bottom of the page. If you don't get it right, you
may use clues by clicking on <?> below the blank box. You
will see definitions of clue words that begin with the same letter
as the missing letter from the puzzle word. As a last resort, click
<Hint by Sound> to hear its pronunciation. This is fun and
effective review method. |

Writing |

In levels 1 and 2, users
are asked to write a paragraph, which includes a topic sentence,
supporting details and commentary, and closing sentences. Users
in levels 3 and 4 are asked to write an essay, which includes an
introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. |

For essay writing, if you
want to write more than one body paragraph, save the first body
paragraph, and then click <Add Another Paragraph>. Try to
improve your vocabulary by using new words from your vocabulary
list. You can also use the American Heritage Dictionary anytime
by clicking on the American Heritage button. Start: If you click
<Start> the selected window will be expanded. The expandable
writing box is designed to make the writing process more convenient.
* Quick Note: Retrieve and review your quick notes to grab some
useful information.
* Print Preview: View your entire essay in a printable view.
* Writing Lesson: Open the Writing Lesson Help file. You will find
a brief guide to the ReadPhonics Writing Section.
After completion, if you registered for the ReadPhonics On-line
Writing Lesson, make sure to check network connection before clicking
on <Submit to On-line Lesson> button to submit your writing. |

ReadPhonics offers you two
kinds of On-line Writing Lessons. This service is very cost-effective
and can be very helpful in improving your writing.
1. ReadPhonics Books Writing On-line Writing Lesson
After reading each chapter, students are asked to write upon the
topic questions in the ReadPhonics program. Students can submit
their writing electronically. We have recruited highly qualified
evaluators, all of whom are graduates of the most distinguished
universities in the United States. Our evaluators will review and
evaluate students' writing personally through the On-line Writing
Lesson.
The SAT Writing Assessment is intended to measure a student's critical
thinking and writing abilities. With direct, specific and friendly
coaching, the ReadPhonics On-line Writing Lesson will gradually
lead students to improve their writing abilities.
2. School Writing Homework On-line Lesson
ReadPhonics also helps student to complete school writing homework
assignments. Students who are having difficulty with grammar, organization,
etc. in their school essay writing can get personalized help on-line.
Continued use of ReadPhonics's On-line program can help students
improve their writing skills and their grades. |

Submit to On-line Lesson (ReadPhonics Book Writing) |

After completing the essay
sections at the end of each chapter, you may submit your writing.
Select a book from the <Book Title> scroll-down menu. After
you select a book, you will see a list of all essays you have completed
for that book. Select a writing sample from the list to submit.
Here, you can also review and revise your essay before submission.
Click <Submit to On-line Lesson> to complete the procedure.
Make sure to check network connection before clicking on <Submit
to On-line Lesson> button to submit your writing. |

Review On-line Lesson (ReadPhonics Book Writing) |

You can review and revise
your writing under this menu. Also, you can see results and comments
from the On-line Writing Lesson. Students can usually receive the
results and comments in 2-3 days.
Comments for Students (Make sure to check your network connection.):
Click <Review On-line Lesson> to see the results for your
On-line Writing Lesson from the Writing Menu. Students will be able
to see evaluations on 6 criteria (Grammar, Vocabulary, Coherence,
Logical Thinking, Clear Expressions, and Creativity) as well as
the teacher's personal comments. |

Register On-line Lesson |

Before submitting any writing,
the user must first register. Click <Register On-line Lesson>,
then you will see the window on the left. Enter the user's information
and click <Continue>.
If you want to pay by credit card, please enter your personal information
including credit card type, number, expiration date, as well as
your name and billing address.
If you wish to pay by check, send it to ReadPhonics(3600
Wilshire Bl. #1136, L.A., CA 90010). If you're not ready to pay,
check the circle at the bottom of the On-line Writing Lesson Plan
and try the <One Free Trial> option. |

Submit to On-line Lesson (School Writing Homework) |

Please read carefully the
procedure for the School Writing on the screen.
Before submitting homework writing, you must register first by clicking
<Register On-line Lesson> on Writing Menu. Click <New Project>
for new homework.
Select the appropriate On-line Lesson Plan, and then create your
new project by entering a title in the Title of Homework box.
Click <Begin Writing> and write your homework. When you are
finished, make sure to save the file. DO NOT CHANGE THE FILE NAME
that has been automatically assigned by ReadPhonics, or your information
may be lost. |

After completing the writing
sections, you may submit your writing. If you don't complete your
homework, you can continue to edit it now or later. When you select
School Writing Submit at the Writing Menu, you can select the current
project from the list. Select the current project and just click
<Begin Writing> to complete your homework. Make sure to check
network connection before clicking on <Submit to On-line Lesson>
button to submit your writing. |

Review On-line Lesson (School Writing Homework) |

Students can usually receive
the results and comments in 3-4 days.
Comments for Students (Make sure to check your network connection.):
Click <Review On-line Lesson> to see the results for On-line
Writing Lesson from Writing Menu Select a list and click <Review
Evaluation> to review. You can edit and print your writing. Also,
students will be able to see the teacher's comments. |

Parents' Checkpoints |

Each checkpoint section
provides you with the date, score, and more details on each user's
performance. A flag will appear if user achieves a perfect score.
The On-line picture indicates that a particular essay was part of
the On-line Writing Lesson. Click <YES> to review the user's
writing, or click the On-line picture to review the On-line Writing
Lesson.
Parents will be able to see evaluations on 6 criteria (Grammar,
Vocabulary, Coherence, Logical Thinking, Clear Expressions, and
Creativity).
The red numbers indicate questions missed during the comprehension
test. |

Install American Heritage
Dictionary: Install American Heritage Dictionary.
Study Option Set-up: Change study options.
Download On-line Writing Data Access: If your operating system is
not Windows XP, and you would like to do the On-line Writing Lesson
or register for ReadPhonics on-line, you must download Microsoft
Data Access files.
Click and follow these steps.
Sample ReadPhonics On-line Lesson: You can review several On-line
Writing Samples.
Help On-line Writing: If your Internet browser is other than MS
Explorer and you have problems receiving evaluated On-line Writing
Lessons, follow these instructions.
Adjust Screen Size: The screen size of ReadPhonics is designed at
1024 x 768. If your screen size is less than 1024 x768.
Register New Book CD: The unlock code ReadPhonics provides you depends
on the number of your Book CD. If you purchase more Book CDs later,
you must register again for the new Book CDs.
Save My Data: If you want to re-install ReadPhonics program and
keep your data, click <Save My Data>. The folder of your own
data is C:\Program Files\visionwork\ReadPhonics\My Data.
Restore My Data: Restore your saved data to current ReadPhonics
folder.

About Company: Information
about ReadPhonics
Change CD-Rom Drive: ReadPhonics program sets the first CD-Rom Drive
for pronunciation and picture. If you have more than two CD-Rom
drives, you must select a CD-Rom drive to use. Make sure the Picture
and Sound CD is in the CD-Rom drive you are going to use and click
<Change CD-Rom Drive> on Help Manu. If you see an apple, click
<Exit>. If not, change selected CD-Rom Drive and click <Show>.
Repeat until you see an Apple. If you see an Apple, click <OK>
to close the screen.
